Religion, Literature, and the Arts
Religion, Literature and the Arts is a newly revised Major/Minor programme. This Major/Minor is for students with (at least) a second class standing, who have completed the prerequisites and are interested in taking the required courses. Entry to the programme is by completion of the application form and consultation with one of the programme advisers. The deadline for applications is mid-September of the current year. Since a seminar is required in third and fourth years an attempt will be made to limit enrolment to thirty students. Students must always plan their choices in consultation with a programme adviser.
Religion, Literature, and the Arts is one of the interdisciplinary programmes within the Faculty of Arts and represents cooperation between a considerable number of departments. It is designed for students interested in exploring the complex and changing relationships between religion, literature, and the arts. In most literary cultures around the world, religious perspectives have often been very influential.
Religion, Literature and the Arts is designed around two seminars and one topics course from the Department of Classical, Near Eastern and Religious Studies and other departments to assist students in exploring the complex interaction between these features of culture. There is an extensive list of courses which also serve the programme but do not necessarily address connections between religion, literature, and the arts. These courses help to deepen understanding of a religious tradition or a literary/artistic/musical culture. Students wishing to explore a religious tradition or a literary culture in a canonical or primary language are certainly encouraged to do so.
