Funding

Overview:

The Department of Classical, Near Eastern and Religious Studies strives to provide financial support to all incoming Master's and PhD students for the regular duration of their programs.

MA students typically receive funding in the amount of $15,000 annually for two years, and PhD students funding in the amount of $18,000 annually for four years.

This  funding consists of entrance scholarships, multi-year funding packages and tuition awards through UBC's Graduate Support Initiative, as well as remuneration for partial and full teaching assistantships allocated by the department.

There are other internal and external sources for funding, such as Affiliated Fellowships awarded by UBC's Faculty of Graduate Studies, as well as fellowships and awards of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) for Canadian citizens and permanent residents. In addition, many faculty hire exceptional students as research assistants.

The Department is working towards establishing more substantial multi-year funding packages that would be offered to its best incoming PhD students, with the academic year 2013/4 as a potential start date.
